TV Asahi has recently announced that Osamu Tezuka’s popular manga series, Black Jack, will be getting a live-action adaptation in 2024. The highly anticipated series will feature Issei Takahashi in the lead role as the iconic character, Black Jack. To accompany the announcement, TV Asahi has also unveiled a visual for the upcoming series.

This new live-action adaptation will mark the first Black Jack drama since 2000 and will adapt select episodes from the original manga. The series will be directed by Hideo Jōjō, with the screenplay written by Yoshiko Morishita. Takashi Ohmama will be in charge of composing the music, while Isao Tsuge will handle costume design and supervise the character designs.

Tezuka’s original Black Jack manga revolves around a brilliant and unconventional doctor who practices medicine without a license. Published in Akita Shoten’s Weekly Shōnen Champion magazine from 1973 to 1984, the manga follows Black Jack as he miraculously saves seriously ill patients and those on the brink of death. However, his exorbitant fees often lead to his rejection by the medical community. Black Jack resides in a secluded clinic with his assistant, Pinoko, whom he had previously saved. Patients who have been abandoned by other doctors turn to him as their last hope.

The Black Jack manga has not only inspired multiple anime adaptations but has also spawned various spin-offs by other creators. Additionally, there have been several live-action adaptations in Japan, including a film in 1977, a series in 1981, a video in 1996, a special in 2000, and another special in 2011.
Furthermore, the popularity of Black Jack has extended beyond Japan, as a Chinese live-action adaptation has also been announced. Beijing Enlight Pictures revealed the project during a press conference, where they announced their upcoming works. The adaptation will be produced by Beijing Enlight Pictures’ subsidiary, Coloroom Pictures.
