Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler Manga Takes a Break to Prepare for New Development

The popular manga series, Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler, will be going on hiatus for a few months in order for the creators to “prepare and recharge” for the manga’s new development. The announcement was made in the January 2024 issue of Square Enix’s Gangan Joker magazine.

Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler, written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Tōru Naomura, first launched in Gangan Joker in March 2014. The manga has gained a significant following over the years and will be celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2024. The 17th compiled volume of the manga was published by Square Enix on July 22.

The Story of Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler

The story of Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler takes place at Hyakkaou Private Academy, an elite school with a unique curriculum focused on gambling. The sons and daughters of the wealthy are taught to read their opponents and make strategic deals to stay ahead. The winners at the academy live like kings, while the losers face harsh consequences. However, when Yumeko Jabami enrolls, she brings a new level of excitement and skill to the gambling world.

Adaptations of Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler

The manga has inspired various adaptations, including a television anime series that aired from July to September 2017 in Japan. The series later premiered on Netflix in February 2018. A second season of the anime aired in January 2019, with Netflix streaming it in June 2019. Both seasons have been licensed by Sentai Filmworks and released on home video with an English dub.

In addition to the anime, Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler also received a live-action adaptation. The first season of the live-action show premiered in Japan in January 2018 and is available for streaming on Netflix outside of Japan. A second season aired in March 2019, followed by the release of the first live-action film in May 2019. A sequel film was released in Japan in June 2021.

Spin-Offs and Other Adaptations

The manga’s popularity also led to spin-off series. Kakegurui Twin, a spin-off manga by Katsura Saiki, began serialization in Gangan Joker in September 2015. The manga concluded on May 22, with the 14th and final volume published on July 22. Another spin-off, Kakegurui (Kakkokari), a four-panel comedy manga by Taku Kawamura, ran from December 2016 to September 2022, with the 10th and final volume published on July 22.

Kakegurui Twin inspired a live-action series that premiered on Amazon Prime in Japan in March 2021. The manga also received a Netflix anime adaptation in August 2022.

Anticipation for the Manga’s Return

Fans of Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler will have to wait a few months for the manga to resume, but it seems that the creators are taking this break to ensure an exciting new development for the series.
